Say cheese!

Picture from cosmonet.org

Right, if I'm going to take proper pictures for my blog and ever improve my photography skills, I'm going to have to invest in a grown up camera. The point-and-shoot we have is fine for snapshots (and actually it's Mr Marmadaisy's, it was a birthday present from me a few years ago), but it just isn't doing what I want it to. And yes, I have read the manual!

So, suggestions please. Nothing too pricey or flashy but decent quality - I don't want anything too technical because Anna and technology are totally imiscable* so a "hobby" camera is what I want. I'd be really interested to hear what everyone uses for their pictures, and how they find it, and what they would have if they could pick any new camera.

And ... I have just discovered that blogger lets you add multiple pictures and not just one, so I don't need to load them all to flickr, when did that happen? Told you I was a techno-dunce.

*I don't think I have used this word since GCSE Science, and I never thought I would use it again. Yay me.

I just discovered your lovely blog and my mouth is watering over that scrumptious onion tart.

I live not far from you, somewhere in between Llanwrst and Conwy! Do you have any local yarn/craft shop recomendations then?

And I forgot to say.... I use a Panasonic DMC-FZ8 which I love, it is sort of in between a "point and shoot" and a full SLR. I felt a bit scared of having a full SLR and also a bit put off by the weight and all the paraphernalia, if you know what I mean? This is very light and portable and the depth of field is pretty good.

You can't go far wrong with a Cannon, either an Ixus compact or if you want to spend a little more, a EOS 400D digital SLR which got rave reviews in all the camera mags. I have both, and actually, you can't tell much difference for blogging ..

My camera is a Fuji Finepix S5700. Here's one:

I could not love this camera more. It's a nice step up from a point and shoot (we had a Kodak Easyshare before) with good manual settings, but not as complicated as a full DSLR. Definitley recommend it - well, actually I would probably recommend the new model (which is the one saraeden has just mentioned I think).

Have you managed to talk Mr Marmadaisy into the fact that you really need one then?

I am a complete no hoper when it comes to technology - I just point and shoot, and it took me ages to work out how to load more than one photo per post - and still have occasional problems with it.

Hubby reckons we need to upgrade our camera (I've only just learnt how to use this one) but i'll let him do all the research!

I also use a panasonic DMC-FZ18 and the difference between this and my last camera (an olympus mju) is dramatic. I love the automatic function - I just seem to be able to point and click and it turns out OK. Also, it does a clever thing with macro where you don't have to be really close to the subject - you just zoom into it. I have a long way to go to be able to use the camera properly though!

I just use a point & shoot. I've got a Kodak Easyshare C663. I'm too scared of manual controls--although my Kodak allows you to operate it manually. I'm in Auto Mode allllll the way. I'm a wimp.
I'll be interested to see what you choose & I'm loving hearing everyone's recommendations. Probably in a year I'll get a new one.

aww camera.. I'm right now looking to get myself a new one due of my work in web design.

I'm currently using a canon powershot A70 and it has last me about 5 years. Great camera for every day use and it also take short videos. You can also buy some bigger and/or smaller zooms when you need it...

I play around once with bloggers when it started and at the beginning they were not offering any upload picture. You had to use other services to make it work. Glad to know that they are still working and improving this great blogging system.

I too had to give in and buy a new camera for blogging etc and ended up with a Nikon D40. Very pleased with it and it is easy to use. It is a digital SLR with automatic features etc.

I've got a Canon EOS 400D and I love love love love it - I really do!! I've even been playing with the manual bits on it and I still love it :)

I've also got an in-betweeny Panasonic DMC-FZ7 which is great as it has a lovely big zoom - it's a bit slow snapping though - I think they call it 'shutter lag' ...ooh, hark at me!!

If I was to start from scratch I'd go for the Canon with the 18-55mm lens. I love it - did I already tell you that?

I could bore you all night, and you'd be very sorry you asked, so I'm going now......
